Lee Trevino - Golf's SuperMex

He was raised by his Mom and Grand Dad in Dallas, Texas
With little hope of ever driving a Lexus
There was a golf course near his home
Where he would spend hours untold
He would hustle a bet nearly everyday
Often with no money to pay
On one bet he would use a Dr. Pepper bottle instead of clubs
Which would leave his opponents feeling like dubs
He joined the Marines as a very young man
Which proved to be a great helping hand
While in the service his golf really rose
And was later discharged so he could turn pro
As he played in events his scores were low
And his prize money began to grow
When he won the open on his second try
The golf world saw he was a special guy
His demeanor during events was happy-go-lucky
Which was a nice change for a game that can be stuffy
He was once described as golf's clown prince
And was always ready with a bag of tricks
He was a jester by day and a loner by night
Explaining he needs a break from the limelight
His practice habits were like an obsession
Which for us all can be a great lesson
He is regarded as one of the best strikers of the ball
Second only to Mr. Hogan, the greatest of them all
He would beat the greatest golfers who would ever live
Because of a work ethic that would not give
Tragically he was struck by lighting in a year
That was still very early in his career
But he still played events after much medical aid
And continued to win with great accolade
Five times the Vardon Trophy he won
A feat only one other golfer has done
A golf pro's career is measured in major victories
And Lee's major record is one of the best in history
The SuperMex is in the twilight of his career
And will always be known as a man of good cheer
And although he still does not drive a Lexus
He can certainly afford one in the heart of Texas
