Devil's Thumb Golf Course (Delta, Colorado)
by Tamela Roush
A masterpiece for Rich Phelps was what he had in mind
A praire-style golf course and moonscape by design
He didn't pick the name but left that to the kids
Of Delta's High School Seniors the name came up for bids
With Grand Mesa to the North and the San Juans to the South
The volcanic ash and adobe mud must have given him some doubts
But he wanted a unique course that would challenge someone's game
So strategic thinking was top priority and here he laid his claim
It is said it has no highways, no houses, and no noise
And the only thing you'll see out there are folks striking their poise
Then the wild-life rests on the tees or they'll come down to roam
It's the antelope and many birds that call this course their home
With several hundred yards and various sets of markers to be played
A player's talent comes with punishment but it's all part of the game
And the golf carts that they bought makes it certainly a pleasure
Canyon fairways going up and down are more than one can measure
The wind can play a large role and shots have to be committed
When you line your club up to the pin you hope your grip is fitted
So if you play this course you'll need a bit of artistic talent
Though it's called a gentleman's game this course is definitely gallant
When all was said and done it rated two by Golf Digest
A diamond in the rough was what was said by all the rest
