Billy Casper - Golf's Unsung Hero
He was a quiet golfer often overlooked
Who more often than not left the other golfers on the hook
He would advance through a tournament methodically
And end up winning more than periodically
His first major win was the Open in 1959
Where he displayed a short game that was exceptionally fine
His career continued with great success
He was always received with the utmost respect
In the 66 Open he overcame incredible odds
With a victory over Mr. Palmer that shocked the golfing gods
In 1970 his string of majors came to an end
With a Masters playoff over Mr. Littler his childhood friend
His last year on tour was 1979
But for Billy it was not the end of the line
He went on the senior tour of the PGA
And continued to win throughout the USA
Although he was one of the greatest golfers of all time
His most important accomplishments were of a different kind
In the 1960's he went to Viet-Nam to visit the troops that were there
Giving them hope and inspiration and showing he cared
His wife Shirley and family he truly loves
They are the first and foremost in all that he does
As a Latter Day Saint he had done untold good
Spreading the message of the "restoration" throughout the world
He is agurably the greatest putter the game has ever seen
When it comes to the flat stick he is the dean
When his tour days ended, 51 victories were amassed
A number that only a few have surpassed
Thousands of youth have learned great skills
Through "Billy's Kids" they developed strong will
The world and the game have been blessed greatly
Because Mr. Casper's many contributions have been so stately
